In addition to the quantitative data collected, students were also permitted to submit written comments. A selection of these is reproduced below.

 

Subject 3: Very interesting tutorial.

Subject 4: This is a very good tutorial. The explanations are easy to understand. It would help the average/beginning computer user learn this topic.

Subject 10: The binary calculator and the java examples help to show in a much more visual way how the properties of "on" and "off" work. Very informative.

Subject 11: The wording was very clear and easy to follow. I thought that the binary calculator was very useful and would be a good tool for students to be able to access from the class website. I found the pages to be very informational about binary numbers. I thought all the links were a nice touch. I also liked the little lights that you can manipulate and thought they would be very helpful in teaching students how to figure binary numbers. I believe this tutorial would make a vaulable resourse for the students in cs105.

Subject 14: Used as an interactive media to help students learn since most college students prefer online studying over books

Subject 20: I found this activity to be informational, but I didn't feel that it actually increased my knowledge of the binary number system. This is probably because I have a strong math background. I found the introduction with references to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern quite humorous. It made the activity more enjoyable. )

Subject 22: great way of simplifying it, with the java applets especially

Subject 25: The first few pages tried to hard to capture attention, and aren't really that necessary in the learning of the binary system. The important part was the fact that the way you calculate a binary number is with the 64 32 16 8 4 3 2 1 system, and that wasn't really stressed.
