| The availability of the tutorial was first announced to the researcher's own class sections, which produced some preliminary results. The tutorial was then offered to other course sections. Before beginning the tutorial, the students were informed that they would be anonymous, and that participation in the experiment was voluntary, in accordance with UIUC research guidelines for experimentation on human subjects. The experiment design was approved by the UIUC Human Subjects Committee. The students then navigated through several web pages featuring text, animated graphics, and Java calculators. The tutorial attempted to emphasize active rather than passive learning. After completing the tutorial the students filled out a web form containing questions about the tutorial. The form was submitted by a Perl script, and contained no personally identifying information.
